from my inbox this morning:

"Hi Carol.   I have three files boxes of past employees that need to be shredded or placed somewhere where you might have readily excess to them.    Please let me know what action you want to take.      Thanks."

How do think I should reply?

I'd say go over the files and see if you can find anything good in them before you sell them on eBay.

Assuming you are part of HR... I'd suggest you take a look at the files before shredding.  Last thing you want is to shred critical files -- and then having the sender telling everyone that he/she had checked with you and gotten your acquiescence.

But if you are not part of HR and/or have no reason to look into personnel files, craft a reply so you have that in writing -- and put the responsibility back to the sender.

Hmmmm...  well, personally it just raised more questions for me...  like how did he (the sender of this email) get my past employees to fit into said file boxes?

Offer a ransom to said employees.  For a fee, you'll discretely let them out of the box and escape through the back door without being shredded.  Go ahead and shred one of them in front of the others to make the point.

Just make sure, as the e-mail said, that you have "readily excess to them."

A little violent, but I think you're on the right track

Yeah, the readily excess, I don't know that I should comment on that, being federal employees it's probably something that's protected by law

Just be careful about letting them all out at once.  After being in there so long, they might have a temper and turn on you.

no kidding - and I have more than 3 past employees so they're probably having to be quite friendly with each other as they are crammed into just 3 boxes

On a side note, at least the government is finally doing something to reduce the burdensome cost of that "employee pension" thing. :D

Is there a shop steward in the box?  If so, ask them if the union plans to grieve the shredding .  If so, figure out what their real issue is, placate the steward and move on.  If not, shred him first so he can't change his mind after the first few scream.

I'm a little confused -- is this e-mail from someone you know and who should have had access to the files in the first place? And if the files are OK to shred then why does the other option require you to have ready access to them? Either they are needed or they are not. The options should be shred vs. cold storage...or, keep them active here or keep them active there.

Since it involves sensitive materials and potential laws/regulations, I suggest referring the matter to your company's legal counsel.

Before proceeding it might be prudent to ask field maintenance whether their tree chipper is certified for bodies or whether you'll need to look up a contract vendor.

Plan "B" would be a nice new walk-in freezer because a simple cold room? Sooner or later there are issues..... #ThereIsNotEnoughVicksInTheWorld

Sure "access" is delayed by the thawing, but it's so worth it length of time without the neighbors complaining-wise....
