Here is an ESPN artcle about him.
I did get to see him play when I was young. I saw him play at the old Sportsman's Park on Grand and Dodier in St. Louis. He wasn't in his prime but at the end of his career. Even still it was a thrill to see a Cardinal legend in uniform on the ball field.
RIP Mr Musial.

It's hard to believe he was already so old. He was a rare talent.

I saw him on TV a few times toward the end of his career. His next to the last year, when he was 41, he hit .330 with 19 homers. His last game, was had 2 hits in 3 at-bats. His last at-bat, he singled off Jim Maloney of the Reds, and drove in Curt Flood to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

The first pro game I ever saw was at Candlestick in 1963, my dad took me just to see Musial before he retired

QUOTE ... and drove in Curt Flood to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. And it's hard to believe that Curt Flood has been dead for 15 years. Curt Flood is another compelling yet little known story. He was another who was not just a ball player but a man of integrity and substance.

He was one of my favorites as a kid. Does anyone remember the LP that Phillips 66 gave away in the early 60's "Batting tips by Stan Musial?

My best friend had met and spent time with Stan many times, and his father was a good friend of Stan's. According to him, Stan was privately everything his public persona appeared to be... quite a difference from today's brat pack.
