Temps right now are -22F, with wind chill of -64F (hit -70F earlier in the day).  Sustained hurricane-force winds of 87mph, with gusts up to 105mph!!!

Thinking about heading up after work for a night hike, who's with me?!?  :;):

no  thanks.  the ski slopes were closed yesterday.  Too cold.  The lift span of the drawbridge froze when it was up.  It hit - 84 on one mtn with the wind chill.  We had a 75 degree temp swing this week.  AND STILL NO SNOW

More thoughts -- not directed at Eastie or anyone else specifically...

"wind chill of -64F (hit -70F earlier in the day).  Sustained hurricane-force winds of 87mph, with gusts up to 105mph!!!"

But if someone were to venture out into the wilds, knowing full well the above conditions, and (heaven forbid) later causing unspeakable anguish to family, loved ones, rescue teams... it makes me wonder how many people reading about it later in the news will proceed with endless second guessing and then conferring "Darwin Awards"??

I fully agree. Being prepared for said conditions is extremely important.

Yeah and NH will bill you for a SAR event if they deem you negligent. Which in these conditions I could see them thinking that

+1.  I've been out in those conditions before (temps were equivalent, gusts registered at 130mph in the town of Nederland in the valley that night, we were camped 2000' higher).  Winds like that will knock a 250lb man wearing snowshoes and a heavy pack right onto his back (ask me how I know).  We didn't make it very far up the ridge, retreated and camped in a somewhat-sheltered enclave in the woods that night, and retreated to the car the next morning.

Such conditions are hardly unheard of in a winter storm.  But being prepared, putting one's ego aside and knowing your own limitations is key.
