From the PC, you are at the moment using.
Go to the above website, and run the simple test.

I'm at work and show:

ping test 50 millisecond
download speed 2.2 megabytes per second
upload speed of 3.5 megabytes per second.  

Results will vary each run.  Select TEST AGAIN.

The site automatically figures out where you are located from your IP address then selects a nearby server.  If you select the NEW SERVER field, one can select a different server.   The further away the slower results will be.    If your computer web access ever becomes sluggish, bring up this site and run the test.  Likely fastest results in the wee morning hours.

My experience is that webpage download/referesh is fast -- but when downloading an actual file, the download speed is more like 0.4 mps.  :(

(The FCC Mobile broadband test yields similar results for my phone, 22, 23.43, 14.93)

Images from the website are probably pre-cached on your local hard drive from previous visits.  Most browsers don't bother re-downloading images that have already been saved.  If you clear the website cache, you might get a better idea of the actual download speed.

Also, it may be that whatever particular porn site you're downloading your large files from just has a slower transmission speed. :D

Just a theory, anyway.

The browser cache is not involved during that website bandwidth test.   Most Internet Service Providers connection services are unequal like that because their systems have been optimized to service customers that download far more than upload.    

Whatever the data direction,  ISP's allocate channel capacity in the most efficient way within the physical capacity of their media that they in turn pay for based on capacity connecting to the Internet backbone carriers.   That is a reason ISPs charge more for hosting websites if they receives lots of incoming traffic from web visitors because requested web pages need to be transmitted out, aka upload, to those visitors.

Possibly the redundancy involved with downloading a larger file rather than an optimized website.  

Websites are generally lots of different slices and therefore you can download more at the same time to get a whole package.  Where as a single file is straight up packet after packet on a single download.

That's my guess.

Some of you guys seem to have speeds that are 20 to 100 times faster than mine.
DSL speeds in the sticks:

Ping = 90ms
Download Speed = 1.32 mbps
Upload Speed = 0.43 mbps

Oh, by the way, same speed on Firefox and Google Chrome, just for the record.

Often, a person's Operating System will cap the speeds available (XP is capped by default at less than 2Mbps. A free program TCP Optimizer available at http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php will allow you to adjust your settings to ensure you actually get your max download and upload rate.

On some Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 systems, you have to run the program as administrator.

Just use the slider at the top, click "modify all adapters", and click on "Optimal settings", and reboot. Instant speed boost on most systems with no lack of stability.

Not too bad...except for the odd fact that the internet here at my parents' house shuts down at 10pm like clockwork and is flaky up/down for a couple hours after that.  I suspect the router or modem is to blame.  I bought their router the last time they had connection problems, and I'm not doing it again.
