Gal lost her camera in Hawaii during an evening dive.  The camera bobbed across the Pacific Ocean, reaching Taiwan after five years.  And it took just two days after posting on Facebook to find the lucky owner!  Not sure which is more amazing:

1.  Camera bobs across Pacific Ocean for 5 years.
2.  Batteries, camera and card all still in good, working order.
3.  Took just two days on Facebook to locate owner.
4.  Now as a publicity stunt, Taiwan's airline is offering the lucky gal a free round trip ticket to Taiwan to pick up her camera.

All pretty amazing!

Impressive, though it had a waterproof shell on, designed to protect it from such things. My camera on the other hand, was run over by the front tire of my F350 and lived... though it did shatter the UV filter, filter adapter, and the built in flash. But I still use the camera today!

I've seen glass Japanese fishnet floats that had seawater inside the solid glass sphere that was forced in by the sea pressure while the globe foated free out in the ocean.

Turns out that mussels and corals and stuff will attach to the floats and over time weight them down until they sink into the depths where the pressure is great enough water is pushed through the glass. Most of them just implode but some survive and once the biological material dies off and drops away the float resurfaces, to be washed up along a West Coast shore or some other beach some years later....

Here's an unofficial durability test (I am not the tester, just saw the video) for the Canon 7d I recently bought. A little long at 16 minutes, but worth it - pretty amusing!

Plopped one into the Mississippi River.  Had the neck strap wrapped around my wrist.  That prevented me from tossing the camera onto the dock when the canoe started to roll.  Fresh water isn't any better for cameras.  The film made it through though.

Get hit broadside sometime by a 6' wave that pops off your spray skirt like saran wrap and swamps your sea kayak, and lemme know how well that wrist-strap protects things for ya. :p

ETA: So I guess I didn't "drop it" in sea-water, to be fair.  More, the sea water visited us a bit more forcefully than expected.  It ruined a gallon bag of dry food, too, and washed away the nav-charts that were bungee'd to the deck.  Luckily everything else came away okay and we got to shore without further incident.  But the camera didn't fare so well.

Every news report I've seen on that story focused on the woman who lost the camera rather than the guy who found it and posted the pictures trying to find the owner.

One of the stories said that his employer (an airlines) was going to fly HER to Taiwan.

Why not fly him to the US to meet her?

The airline wants to promote tourism in Taiwan -- actually a fantastic travel destination -- and 'forever' a best kept secret!!

That same guy spray painted a Nikon D70 pink and it kept working for quite some time.. his durability tests are always a complete riot to watch :)
