So my pump blew out Saturday evening. Didn't have treatment pills or a way to boil. Say I said **** it. I played giardia roulette. Maybe drank 10oz of untreated water. Am I going to get sick or die?

Those were my thoughts. Although I probably would have made it back ok.

Have you ever gotten it? Know anyone that has? Am I going to die?

I had some strange giardia-like symptoms once. No tests could resolve the problem. Doctor couldn't figure out what it was. I took antibiotics for giardia, but they didn't help.

All told, it was the nastiest illness I've ever suffered in my life. But I've had such good health for 60 years, that it really stands out as a weird exception.

And yeah, you're probably going to die some day, but don't cut in line. Me first.

Yes, you are going to die.

But, not today, and very probably not due to drinking unfiltered water.

How clean was the water, were you close to where it emerged from the rocks or ground?  Was it contaminated by cattle and horse feces?

All of those things affect the probability of being exposed to giardia, and then there is the condition of your immune system and its ability to resist.

Good luck, but you're not dying today, so carpe diem!

No interest in the gear but if your not using your corpse any longer I could use it for a few projects I have going on.

Depends on what you got.  Think most places you may only have problems with a lot of cattle upstream, so we are probably out of luck ... this time.

It was about ~11000. Besides the large herd of cattle swimming in the lake probably your typical Colorado mammals upstream.

No, but the microbe will make you pray for it.

I know a guy who got unlucky with it once. He was 98lbs when it was finally killed off.  Granted he was only 135ish before it settled in.

I have had giardia once.  I suppose my case was relatively mild compared to what others have had, but it was nasty at the time.  Don't want to repeat that.

Here is the CDC info on the dang pest.

I think he did.  He was on this site and TT for a while, a long time ago.  NJpacker was his ID.

Don't remember whether he picked it up in NJ or PA.

His experience is why I always, always, treat water.  I like my guts on the inside, where they belong, thankyouverymuch.

Your odds are very good that you'll be fine with this one incident. I have, however, gotten giardiasis three times and I don't care to get it again.

I have done quite a bit of research and have found that giardia for backpackers is no myth.

Drank unfiltered water for a year at Butedale. Didn't ever have a problem. 'Course, Butedale is waybackcountry and the lake is huge, and the nearest beaver dam is 6 miles away at the other end of a lake. I know; beaver not required for beaver fever.  ;-)  Anyhoo, just sayin' not to worry too much. Of course Butedale lake is  (Unofficially) the cleanest on Earth. 0.01PPM dissolved mineral content. (Officially) And no particulate filter needed. So I may just be blowing smoke out my butt.

Cheers! And no more unfiltered water! (Unless it's from Butedale.) ;-)

Peace!

Snausages are far too rich. Your diet will need to be much, much blander. Go to your grandparent's favorite restaurant. That's what you get.
