I hate sitting for passport photos.  I need some right now, and I happen to have one that I don't actually hate.  Problem is, the photo needs to have a white background -- and mine is blue (of course).

I know Photoshop / GIMP can work wonders, but I'd rather not download the thing and learn the ABC's just to get one photo's background color changed.

Can you help me?  If so, please PM me and let me know your email -- and I will forward my photo to you (.jpg format).  All I need is to change the background color.  Thanks!

Just wondering, Ben, if you can do that.  I recall the instructions for a passport photo explicitly ban alterations.  Granted this wouldn't be to you, but I wonder if they might reject it for that?

Hi Rebecca:

Actually, not a problem...

I read the State Dept's website for rules and regulations (and found out they want only photos with white / off white background).  There is this blip about alterations:

"Photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change your appearance in any way. "

And I am looking for help to change background color -- not my appearance.  Saw this handiwork using Photshop.  Exact same mouse, but different color background.  Wish I knew how...

With a uniform background just use the "magic wand*" selection tool to select the entire blue field, then click the "delete" key.

Before using the tool look and see what the selection tolerance is set at, make it as low as possible so the selection will only contain the blue.

Done.

* Just about any version of Photoshop has a great Help section, if you can not find the magic wand tool (and its icon is a stick with a sparkly end, just like Tinkerbell's) just type "magic wand in the Help box for instructions on where to find it.

HSF -- which software?  I do not have Photoshop or GIMP.  I normally do simple edits with Picasa.

Sorry thought you has PS.

Also set the thing to "contiguous" so you only grab pixels in the background and not in your tie or eyes etc.

The other term you might search for is "color selection". Or "selection, color".

Plan "B" though tedious, would be to use the freehand selection tool to just hand draw around your head and delete the background that way.

Here is my handiwork -- using simple Picasa.  Not quite there.  :(

But at the working size I bet that's acceptable. The slightly rough edge notwithstanding.

ETA: One trick for that sort of hand work? Blow it up huge, fill your monitor. That way any small movement of your selection tool doesn't get magnified across so many pixels. Lots easier to follow edges when they are magnified.
