Desert Dweller's thread about the death of a member of The Pogues got me wondering something.  I'm a huge fan of The Pogues, but they never had big mainstream American success.  Conversely, a lot of bands that I think have a fraction of their talent have had huge hits and are acclaimed as "brilliant" or "visionary".

So, in your opinion, what bands are wildly overrated?

That was kind of what I was thinking when I started the thread...

+1 to DMB.

Not sure what all the fuss is about. Maybe because DMB and U2 are "safe"

The Rolling Stones

I saw them back in the mid 80s.  Santana blew them off the stage.

In all fairness, I've heard they've done some great performances and some not so great, let's just say I thought they were a bit off that night.

Iggy Pop opened.

This topic is always sure to generate some controversy...

Going back a little further (I am a child of the 60s), I never really got what the fuss was over the Stones. I don't think they sucked or anything, but their sound and style and songwriting always just seemed not very remarkable to me.

Of all of the pioneering "super groups" from that era of popular music, they always seemed the least interesting to me.

I'll also agree the Stones are overrated.

I've never understood the Grateful Dead fervor either, but I guess they are more an "experience".

And any form of boy band can just go away.

I was never really excited about Springsteen until I saw him in concert.

KISS?  Were they ever rated highly by anyone?  (who wasn't 17)  :p

I've also heard Madonna puts on a really good live show, though I've never had a desire to verify that.

I think we are all giving away our ages with this thread. I'll second the motion on Kansas, I heard their sound described once as "corporate rock".

I have noticed that death causes memory blur as well.  On June 24th, 2009; Michael Jackson was just a weird, washed up pop star with a lot of cash and a questionable interest in children.  By the 26th, he was a pioneer that was taken too soon.

Kurt Cobain died before people realized what an awful voice he had.

Being born in 1977, I never understood much of the hype around early rock bands.  When I hear Hendrix, I hear a guy that could have used a lead singer.

While I'm killing sacred cows, I never understood Bob Marley either.

I've never understood why people put Kansas in that category of "corporate rock." (To me, bands from that era like Styx and Journey exemplify corporate rock.)

Whether one likes Kansas or not, their music was much more unique and innovative than other so-called corporate rock groups.

You put the Beach Boys in with the Spice Girls!??

The Beach boys were incredibly talented, so are the Eagles..

I'll agree with U2 and add Coldplay.

That is what this is all about, personal taste and nothing more. It's an "I don't like them so why shoulf anyone else" attitude.  As John Prine said it in a song "Fifty million Elvis Presly fans can't be all wrong."

But anyway ... I know it's only rock'n' roll ...
