This guy has been hanging out at our place all summer long....usually with his/her mate.  It was hard to sleep well at first, especially with the windows open, but we've gotten used to them now.

A lot of birders would love to check that one off their list....Grays are notoriously difficult to spot, though that one looks like he's not too shy.

That's the closest/best view I've ever gotten of a Gray. I've been within touching distance of a Screech Owl, and within 25 yards of the Snowy, Barred, Burrowing and Great Horned, but this particular Gray just took my breath away.

Owls are wonderful!

Sadly the shots with my zoom lens all came out blurry.  I saw this one in Gettysburg in May of 2000.  It seemed to be a young owl and wholly unconcerned by my presence.  I have no idea exactly what type of owl it is.

There are half a dozen pairs of some type around here* but I only hear them around at night and rarely see them except at dusk and dawn and then not enough for an ID.

*I know this because I can hear the hooting in several different places at once. Maybe challenges?

Fun photos! We can hear them in the neighborhood and can occasionally see one flying by in the dark, but I haven't really seen them.

Back at the house I would sometimes see one swooping past in the twilight, but never heard them hoot.

You folks make me jealous.  I love owls and I'm happy just to spot a barn owl.  A great horned, a Snowy, a Grey... I'd be in bird watching Heaven.

Two immature barred owls along the West Fork Dosewallips River, ONP, July 2013.  The light was very low but it was hard missing these two babies because they were making a huge racket.  We heard them a long way off.  They still had their downy feathers but could fly from tree to tree.  I am not sure if they were completely fledged.  We never saw any adults around though.

Here's another one. While all owls are cool, I think the Great Gray is my favourite from a photography standpoint. I just ordered a 3'x2' print of this photo for my living room at home. I took this shot about two years ago.

Other relevant questions:

Does it depict a supernatural being, or a dancer costumed as a supernatural being?

If it's a dancer, is the dancer male or female?

Does the supernatural being have a male, female, or other nature?

My drawing surface is asphalt, but it sometimes has a chalk pictograph on it.

We do have plenty of owls around here, but they're camera-shy.

Well, thank you - I guess after a 1/2 hour or so of tracking him/her down I was hoping to be able to get a little closer, but to no avail. There was another one perched about 50 feet away and they kept calling back and forth, I was hoping to get a little owl porn, but they both flew off after about 5 minutes...I guess they were a little more modest than the Paris Hilton types...
