I was thinking about the age of various posters on this forum and realized there are a bunch of old farts, myself included, on it.  In fact, it seems like a lot of us are in the upper years, whatever they are. I'd guess the average age is somewhere around 50.  Does that sound a bit high?  What would you think for the average age?

I would put the average age of posters on this forum at a bit higher, maybe 55.  There are some young'uns  their early 30's, some others in their 40's, but a large contingent of us older than 60.  We seem to have fewer demands on our time, so we hang out here.

I'll claim the average. . . Zeke is probably right, especially about us frequent posters.  Though I'm not yet an old fart...just an aging fart.

Kind of depends on how you arrive at an "average." Would the post count be weighted? Or would a post count of 100 be weighted just as much as a post count of 1000? I would have guessed age 45 or so for an average (mean) age, but that is by not placing much emphasis on how much a person posts.

Beyond that, there are the regional forums, gear etc. We probably don't all see a very good representative sampling of membership.

Well I do have several friends from high school who are already accumulating grandkids.  But the next time someone asks you that, you should probably smack 'em with a hiking pole anyway.
People usually think I'm significantly younger than I actually am, because around here, people with kids the ages of mine are typically in their mid 20's. It works for me.  :)

I've been watching Barney Miller reruns lately.  Abe Vigodda played a cop close to retirement who looked and acted a lot closer to death.  Vigodda is still alive at age 92, having long outlived his character on Barney Miller. But his 60 something character is a far cry from those of us in our 60's today.

I spent my 60th birthday last winter on a bushwhack snowshoe. I recently heard a comedian say "60 is the new 40, and 40 is the new...12.)

One certainly sees plenty of younger folks on the trail, although I see that not a single "vote" has yet been cast for "20s" on Ben's survey.

Here's a theory: maybe it takes many years of hiking before one defines themselves as a "backpacker," and is obsessed enough about it to frequent a site like this?

I'm in my 40's for a couple more months, BTW, so excellent timing on the question.
