There's a certain amount of confusion about how avatars should be added to your account.

You can actually upload an avatar via your Control Panel, then select it from the scrolling list of images that all start with "uploaded_..."; just browse for yours. That said, it's way easier to use Imageshack or Photobucket. (Photobucket is my current favorite for ease of use.)

First and foremost, the maximum display size for an avatar is 120x120. That's a bump up from the default size that is 64x64, but that also explains why some avatars are just small after being uploaded; you are supposed to set the size when you upload the image in your Control Panel.

Two mistakes are common:

1. Failure to set any size (and getting the 64x64 image)
2. Failure to use a correct proportion when the original image is not square. That results in a picture being squeezed into a square, distorting the image.

Use this site to get your large image reduced correctly: WebResizer

Another mistake that shows up a lot is when you think everything was done correctly, yet the image still shows as 64x64. In every case when I check these, it turns out the uploaded image was at some resolution OTHER than 72ppi. Often it's at 96ppi (a PC default) and the software doesn't know what to do with that. Make sure your image resolution is 72, nothing else! I find them up to 300 and higher! Wrong.

I used that site last night to set up my new avatar. It was very easy. I'm not sure about the resolution though. Does the site set that for you?

Looks like yes. I just opened your avatar and it's absolutely correct: 120x120 at 72ppi.

I have tried twice now to resize my avatar on the shrinkpictures website apparently with no luck since it continues to be removed.

I'm sort of curious to learn if you think *I* am removing that avatar? I am not. In fact I sort of thought it was a joke that your avatar says "Resize your avatar...". *

As for, "I set the pixels to 78 and clicked resize ...": I have no idea where you're seeing that! You choose a photo to upload, set a final size (that's where the 120 comes in), then the program creates three cropping options: Bam! You then download the image to your computer, then UPLOAD that image back to either the Backpacker server (boo hiss) or use one of the hosting sites like Imageshack or Photobucket, etc. (Read the other thread about "How to add an image..." for links and comments.

The name of your new avatar will be bizarre, like "php5VhQAp_c3PM.jpg". I suggest you rename it so you can actually find it again, especially if you upload it to the BP server.

*Added info: As you will note, I just resized your flying squirrel photo with ShrinkPictures.com. The only setting I needed to set was 120 for pixel size. What you did was simply grab the line of code INSTEAD of seeing that you needed to download the cropped photo, then upload it to another site.

I will say that ShrinkPictures should just get rid of the line of code (which seems useless to me) since the big red line of copy under each choice says "Download this picture". I also have tried the companion site for "free hosting" but it really sucks! It bombards you with advertising, actually opening new web pages I never asked for! I'm sticking with Imageshack. I'm also spinning my wheels re-doing avatars! Think I'll quit now.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that you were removing it.  I would just use the line code and set it with one of the three cropped photo options, then a few hours later the resize avatar would pop up instead.   I think I mistook the 78 pixels for what should have been, as you said, 120.  Upon further review that was ppi, which I assume means pixels per inch.  Anyway, I'll give it another go round!

Thank you for further explaining this to me, I just hope I have better luck backpacking than avataring.  I will figure it out eventually!

What does the "Upload your own avatar" option at the bottom of the Avatar setup page do?

It seems to me that this is where one would select a file off their local computer and upload it to BP.  But I've used the shrinkpictures.com website to make a 120x120 pic, saved it to my desktop, and tried to upload it - but it doesn't work.

I know I'm sizing my file correctly because if I point the BP avatar to that URL it displays nicely, but disappears a few hours later (as expected).

So what is that bottom option for?

It seems to me that this is where one would select a file off their local computer and upload it to BP.

That is exactly right. The problems are twofold:
The name is changed when it uploads (the software adds "uploaded..." and that makes it hard to find when you don't know that), and 2) people somehow think that the big images are made "right" by the software. They aren't.

QUOTE

I don't understand this. Your avatar is absolutely correct: right display size and good file size. Are you saying that this will disappear pretty soon? And if so, why is that "expected"?

QUOTE
So what is that bottom option for?

Do you mean the button that says "Add my own image as my avatar"? If so, that is the first step, then you go up to the first button that says "Add this avatar to my profile" and fish for the now-uploaded file, then ADD that found image to your profile for public display.

Hope this makes sense.

I attempted to fix it and have uploaded about 326 sheepdog images but I guess none of them tickle your software because they keep scaling them down!

There is a cloud of mystery when it comes to avatars.

As for "scaling them  down": you have two tasks before uploading images. The first is to get the dimensions correct. Anything not greater than 120 pixels on the longer side is fine. The next thing that is more often overlooked is to set the display dimensions to match. That info goes into boxes just under the image when you're setting it up. Yes, the software should do that but it doesn't.

I browsed the uploaded images (tedious task) and yes, I saw plenty of sheepdog avatars. Too bad I have no power to remove stuff from that list as there are huge images and tons of old useless images taking up space.

I found one sheepdog that looked good and posted it for you.

Why do you think your avatar is screwed up?

When I helped you with this a week or so ago, I made a correct avatar and sent it to you. I don't think you got it posted correctly, so I handled that too. Note that your avatar is correctly sized and hosted in my bp2go account on Photobucket. You could snag the image and take another stab at posting it to your user account if you want.

Where did you upload the pics?  To this site or to a hosting site such as Photobucket?

You somehow grabbed the wrong code. The site explains, "This image was written to a temporary file and will automatically be deleted within the next 2 hours." That's why you got an ad box.

1. Upload your image and resize it to CUSTOM size of 120 pixels.

2. Note that the line UNDER the new image says "Host This Image at www.4freeimagehost.com (opens in a new window)"

3. In the NEW WINDOW, copy the link info UNDER the picture.
CODE
http://www.4freeimagehost.com/show.[B]php?i=PUSH[/B]039a44493ed0.jpg

4. Copy and paste it into the space for your CUSTOM avatar in your control panel. Save the changes.

That code was what put a new avatar in place for me.

NOTE: You may need to try posting the new stuff a couple times. It's that cruddy "php?i=PUSH..." stuff that makes the software want to reject it. I tried twice and it finally took.

You're actually better off to use Photobucket for all of this.

Read No. 22, above. You grabbed the wrong code! You need to download the resulting picture and put it on another site, then load that URL. Strange, huh?

Everyone seems to have lots of trouble getting a 120x120 image for their avatar; try WebResizer.com.

It's blurry because your picture is blurry!

It's also way too big (720x540), and a bigger file than it needs to be (70k), it was 96ppi instead of 72, and it had an orange cast to it.

Did you miss the instructions on how to do an avatar? or were they not clear? My intent was to offer information that helps people get over this problem, but maybe I need to say things differently.

A minute with Photoshop and now it's corrected. Snag it and repost it and you're good.

bp2go  Did I do it right , did I???

I don't think you're uploading your avatar, you're linking to your computer!

You start by having a correctly sized avatar (120x120 max) ON your desktop. Then you go to Your Control Panel > Personal Info > Avatar Options. At the bottom of that window, see the UPLOAD Your Own Avatar, and see the BROWSE button. Use that to browse your desktop for the avatar, then click UPLOAD. If your avatar is not 120 square, set the correct sizes under the avatar's location info.

After that, comes the tedious part: click on SHOW ALL AVATARS. Wait as the huge list of mostly oversized images grows and grows, then look for your avatar now named with "uploaded_" in front of the name. You have to scroll way to the right to even see the names. Use your FIND command (probably Control+F?) and look for the name you gave your avatar.

Copy that name of "uploaded_(avatar name)" and then paste it into the "Add my image..." space in your control panel.

Seriously, this is WAY harder to do than using a Photobucket account and using that URL.
