You have two options: 1) Add a single image as a "footnote" to a message 2) Add up to 10 images linked in as illustrations to a trip report.
ALL IMAGES SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN 600 PIXELS WIDE!.NOTE that this used to be 800, but software changes have reduced that to 600. AND the file size should be no more than 160k.
See below for what happens when the photo is too wide and MSIE is the browser. Note the right side is too wide and needs scrolling.
To add a single image to a message, look to the last options on the page where you create the message and see the button that allows you to browse your computer for a file; select the file and upload it:
To add from one to ten images inline, use a hosting site like Photobucket or Imageshack. Upload your images to that hosting site, then when you see your images there, notice the many options for sharing; choose the direct link that starts with HTTP and ends with JPG. Copy that link info, come back to your forum message and paste it in. Then select that new bit of code and use the IMAGE button to convert it. Actually all that does is put IMG tags around the code, but you can do that manually if you wish. Here is what calls for the image shown just above:
Note that images need to be no bigger than 600 pixels wide or they blow out the space allowed and create problems for viewers. I can't re size these mistakes so there's a chance I will just remove them.

Whew! Anything but easy. I used my iPad and found that adding an attachment is not possible!, so I went to Photobucket to copy a link. That too was hard, but I found that pressing on the link will pop up the bubble that lets you scrape over the link and copy it, then coming here I could paste that info. Now I'm editing the message with my Mac.
My best answer? Take the photos home and upload without using an iPhone.
Couldn't find anything on PPI, but after wandering around in Photobucket, I made another try...
It worked. Seems right-clicking properties in Photobucket doesn't provide the true dimensions of the photo. Go to edit, then resize to see the actual size. Mine were bigger than the "properties" size, so I changed it.
Yaaay! That worked. In Flickr you can go to the drop down next to Action in the upper left of your image, get the "Grab the html/BB code", copy and paste.
[Note from bp2go: Have you read post No. 2? I ask because I'm supposing you're trying to attach a file, and you may not know to UPLOAD that file! You can't link to a picture on your desktop. Since your posts contain zero code, I wonder what you're using to test this method? -- Steve]
A test on 4 image sizes with widths of: 600 720 750 800 pixels
to see how MSIE responds. Note other browsers as Firefox view all the above images ok as the Backpacker forum code resizes images over the 750 pixel limit bp2go mentioned above to 600 pixel widths.
My above post with 720 and 600 pixel wide images displayed without any issues.
The 600x453 pixel image was left alone thus not scaled by the Backpacker forum software.
The 720x543 image was scaled to 600x543 pixels and did not affect the forum window width.
In this post I is this 800 pixel wide image:
When viewing posted images with browsers as Firefox, right clicking on a posted image shows a drop down list. Select Properties. That will show how the forum software has downsized a posted image that is more than 600 pixels wide to 600 pixels wide. For instance Firefox will display an Element Properties popup with Image Dimensions: 720px × 543px (scaled to 600px × 453px)
If using Microsoft IE, performing the same will only show the downsized image size and not the original posted image size. If one is viewing with MSIE and the posted image is greater than 750 pixels wide, although the forum software will still downsize an image to a 600 pixel width, because MSIE has an issue of ignoring the forum code, it blows out the width of the forum window so one needs to go to the bottom of the posts and use the horizontal scroll bar back and forth to view a post. In other words MSIE acts like the original large image is still being viewed and displays a forum window too wide to view without a horizontal scroll bar even though only a 600 pixel wide image is shown.
Since my second above post did not cause the forum width to blow out even though I posted an 800 pixel wide image using MSIE, here I am posting the same image but while using the Mozilla Firefox browser.
So using Firefox made no difference, the forum window still looked ok. This time will post using MSIE but post a larger version of the above file with a 968 pixel width that I use on my own website:
That most definitely caused the width to blow out so I edited the post removing the image.
Next I reduced the image to 850 pixels wide and it caused the image to shift all the way to the left and skewed the text area left but did not blow out the forum window width or add a horizontal scroll bar. So I resized for a 900 pixel wide image. That again caused the forum window width to blow out wide so I replaced it with the former 850 pixel wide image that was just beginning to show some issues. Apparently somewhere between 850 and 900 pixel widths cause the blow out condition. From this, it appears posting images of 800 pixels widths are probably going to downsize fine but anything wider may increasingly cause issues.
