These books have been out for a while, but if you haven't read "The Good Rain" or "The Big Burn" by Tim Egan, you need to.

"The Good Rain" is about the environmental history of the Pacific Northwest, and "The Big Burn" is about the founding and original mission of the Forest Service, and the political and commercial concerns allied against it.

Egan is a captivating, well-researched writer.

The Big Burn is amazing. It is primarily about Pinchot and TR, and does a great job of detailing the birth of the forest ranger profession. It also includes some interesting info about Pinchot's personal life...he was kinda strange. God bless him, but he would be medicated if he were living in today's society. Odd how the birth of our national forests and parks mostly revolved around a bunch of oil and steel barrons and ivy league aristocrats. Good on them for spending their fiduciary and political capital wisely.

The Worst Hard Time is also another terrific book of his. Chronicles the lives of people living through the Dust Bowl. That whole generation of people were a different species than what we have today. Wow, I couldn't go through that.
