This 2014 book is about the first women to complete the Appalachian Trail back in 1955.  She was a 67 year old great-grandmother who told her children she was going for a walk. While lot of people have heard about Grandma Gatewood this book goes into detail about her life and walk.  The author interviewed her children, those she met on the trail and had access to her journals.

I attended a presentation by the author earlier this month.  While I have yet to read the whole book it looks like a good read.

I may have to check this out.  It's been years and years since I read anything about her hikes on the AT.
