Hey all - just curious if anyone else deals with significant and daily heartburn, and what you all do to deal/treat it?
I have had many tests and such done, but no real underlying reason can be found (other than the muscle that would usually close to stop the acid from rising, is not so string anymore).
I have been taking the generic version of Prilosec for YEARS, and it has usually subdued any acid issues very well. However, it has been unstoppable all of a sudden!!
Any ideas? I realize it's a better question for my doctor, but he hasn't been particularly helpful on the issue, and it might be time for a new one (or a specialist).

I also have chronic heartburn/reflux.
My daughter saw an allergist for a while who was adamant that chronic heartburn was related to upper respiratory drainage and allergies. I have found that my heartburn is, in fact, seasonal, with the current season typically being the worst.
So, if you're experiencing any congestion or drainage or other allergy-like symptoms, maybe treating that will also help with the heartburn.

Hmmm...unfortunately my allergies are seasonal, but this is not the season that they bother me. However, you bring up a good point in that the change was rather abrupt, so perhaps there is something "environmental" that is causing the reflux to surge, if you will. Thanks for your thoughts!

You've had a 'scope shoved down there recently? Mucosal changes can cause your symptoms to get worse. Might want to make sure you don't have some Helicobacter hanging out down there as well...backpackers are pretty easily exposed to it.
There's stuff that gets popular this time of year that can aggravate it (hello peppermint and fatty wonderful food, I'm looking at you). Aside from the usual - lose weight, raise the head of your bed, stay upright after eating, nix the tobacco and alcohol, chew gum, etc...there's not much for it but to head to the doc and see if he wants to up your dose of Prilosec, switch to a longer acting PPI, add an H2 blocker or refer you to GI.

I've been scoped before, but not recently. I have been considering getting another one of those, reluctantly. I'll mention the Helicobacter when I see the doc.
Thanks everyone for the advice!!

QUOTE mine basically went away when I stopped eating wheat. You know what's interesting. Yesterday's spell was really bad in particular (prompting me to make this post), and I started my day with Cream of Wheat. The heartburn began within a few hours. I've been tested for gluten intolerance, and that came up negative (but sometimes there are false negatives). Maybe it's time to get tested for that again. Not sure if the intolerance medical tests are all that great. I had a similar issue (got scoped, even) but started mixing in more bland foods with my spicy foods as a home remedy. Actually had to eat teriyaki, rice, etc.. mostly for a month and the symptoms went away.

Just want to say that I had heartburn so bad with both pregnancies and thankfully it went away as soon as I gave birth. I would not wish it upon anyone and I hope you find relief ASAP!!

Just an update. Been much better the past few days. Removed a good majority of wheat (though not all sources) from my diet, just as an experiment, and it seems (initially anyway) to be working. I've played with going gluten-free over the years, but never committed. Maybe it's time to give it a go...but damn I love my food the way it is!!
PS. Thanks for all the advice!

I have SEVERE G.E.R.D. And have had good luck using Omeprazole ( OTC ) from Walgreens daily , and adding a decongestant at certain times of the year ( allergy seasons). If I have a extra bad day, bland food and GasX help out.
I find that Chinese food also helps keep it down, as long as I avoid the spicier stuff.
Best of luck and I hope some of this info helps out.
