Your bones are probably more dense but your cartilage more worn out. "People typically lose about 1 cm (0.4 inches) every 10 years after age 40. Height loss is even more rapid after age 70. You may lose a total of 1 to 3 inches in height as you age." Do backpackers shrink more or less?

I thought this was a question about weight loss on the trail--I was going to say about 3-5 pounds a week :D

Yeah, and the weight rebounds fairly quickly, for me, but not the height.

When splashing about in mountain lakes, male backpackers shrink significantly. ;-)
