I was killing time at Target yesterday and noticed on the 50% off closeout racks some pretty lightweight hooded down jackets (90% down, 10% feathers) for $25. The shell is pretty lightweight, it feels more like a sweater - I wouldn't wear it in real full-on winter conditions, but it looks to pack pretty small and I'd be surprised if it weighed more than 12 oz. or so, if that. Nothing in my size that I saw yesterday, so I can't comment on fit, etc. But if you didn't treat it too harshly it looks like it could be a good bargain.
Even comes with a little stuff sack. I'd assume there is a men's version as well, but didn't wander that far down in the store.
Just thought I'd let you know if you were in the market for a cheap down layer for the shoulder seasons.

Picked one of these up for my daughter back in November... she loved it! Adult small fit her very true to size with a bit of room to grow into, but not too much. She was quite comfy in it on our recent outing that got down to about 25* F at night. Perfect item for a growing teenager to have 'real' gear.... sorry not buying her the high $ stuff yet!!!

I'll take a look. At that price, I could see getting one even if it proved too heavy or whatever for backpacking. Assuming, of course, that there are any in our store, and in my size. I did look at a down jacket at Target earlier this winter, but thought it probably not warm enough--seemed kind of thin. Even if this is the same, for $25 I'd use it car-camping and save the better one for BPing (since I always bring extra clothes when I've a car to carry them).

Didn't see any hooded ones at my Target, and the hoodless ones I saw were atrocious colors - flourescent lime green and the hottest of hot pinks
They did have their version of a soft-shell on sale as well, in better colors - a subdued blue and black.

For the record, I finally got to Target and they're gone. It's all bikinis now.
Do women really buy their clothes a full season in advance? I thought it was all about instant gratification!

Ha, it's funny this year that gals can wear bikinis right now while they're on the rack, but when winter finally arrives...good luck finding a jacket or coat.
