Hello. I am starting to plan a 2013 backpacking trip to Banff National Park in Canada. I'm curious of your opinions on when the best time is to visit -- for example I'd ideally find a time when lows are around 40F and highs are around 80F (like Colorado right now) and also a time when mosquitos are minimal. Thanks for your thoughts.

I went for an overnighter during the third week of June this year.  Was a little rainy (fine rain/mist) but was great otherwise.  Lows at night may have dipped into the high 30s but didn't seem that cold.

We stayed at the lower elevations though, in the area around Lake Minnewanka.

It looks like August is your best bet in Banff for that temperature range.

The later you go the less likely mosquitoes will be a problem and the cooler it is likely to be.

It's your hike, but for many people it's more comfortable hiking in cooler weather.

It was really nice there a couple of Septembers ago. Weather could not have been better when we were there, but in a RV, not backpacking.

Being further north Banff doesn't often seen 80 degrees - ever.  That being said late August early Sept would be my recommendation but that depends too on where in Banff NP you plan to backpack.  Mosquitos right now are awful but that is due to a late snowmelt and lots of rain in June.
