Hey,

I just had an idea to take a trip travelling an old trade route. I was wondering if any one here would have any ideas of a good back pack trip to take. I looked into the silk road but i'm worried about getting into some conflict areas.

I would hope the trip would cross multiple countries and landscapes. I'm just finishing my university degree in geology and i'm looking to celebrate!

Let me know if you guys can think of anything cool!!!

Tracing the Crusades would take you though geologically interesting (albeit expensive) areas for which visas wouldn't be as much of a hassle.

Tracing Mayan routes would also be fairly easy visa-wise (with one particular exception), but the geology would be rather boring.

I really like your thought process. When I was in London, I purchased this book, 'london walks' , it was a book that gave you maps of the city and walks to follow. As you did the walks , it would tell you really interesting historical things and where they happened. Things I never would have known. Example: it took you to a building, said look up at the second story window, in that room at a desk was where 'Lawrence of Arabia' was written. Another street pointed out : this is where the IRA detonated a carbomb killing this politician. Another showed you metal objects near the street "these were used in the old days, you put your flaming torch into them to extinguish them when you went inside." This is where Jack the Rippers victim was found. It was a lot of fun and introduced me to a London I never would have seen.
Good luck, this sounds like a great idea. But do be cautious of middle eastern countries.  Any white person can be very quickly assumed to be CIA or something and you can find yourself in a lot of trouble. People on the internet love to ramble on about how safe places are but people are kidnapped and they are killed for their appearence in the middle east.
