I had the chance to visit the Sierra Norte mountains in Oaxaca, Mexico this past January during a two week stay in that state.

Its not backpacking per se, and you are not on your own - its organized though the Pueblos Mancomunados, which is a collective of very small pueblos in in the same general area. you have a guide, which helps to provide jobs in these small towns which in turn keeps more folks from wanting to leave their homes in search of work.

you can camp in tents or stay in pretty bare bones cabins - due to the high altitude, it was very cold at night so I stayed in a cabin. you are provided a hot meal and firewood for the only heat source in the cabin.

the hiking is essentially walking the ancient trails between villages. I started at about 10k above sea level and took a descending route through three villages and covered about 30 miles. the toughest part was being in "winter shape" and the extreme temperature shifts from windy and cold to very hot.

it was a great experience and will likely be back one day. if I can figure out how to post pics i'll do so one day.
