I recently made a discovery re: lightweight cold weather outfit.
While in Patagonia, last month, I purchased an alpaca fur neck warmer.
because it is fur it is very warm and also it's light.
Previously my cold weather outfit was: down jacket, fleece jacket, longsleeve shirt.  (and of course, gloves, bomber hat and beenie hat.)
But after experimenting, I've found I'm warmer and LIGHTER by ditching the fleece and substituting the neck warmer.
So now it's long sleeve shirt, neck warmer, down jacket.
I've shaved about 2 pounds off my pack load and am warmer.  Today I walked around in 6 degree fahrenheit and had no problem.

You did good ditching the fleece. For a weight to warmth ratio, fleece is way down the list.

alpaca fur neck warmer was 30 bucks, but I got it in Argentina and they have all sorts of goofy things going on with their economy so things are cheap. it sure is warm!! Those alpacas know how to stay toasty up in their mountains.
