hi everyone.
could anyone tell me where i would be able to do a short overnight hike with a 5 year old close to the Fort Worth area? he's never been hiking or camping so i would like to keep it kind of short. I dont want him to hate it the first time out but i do want him to enjoy the outdoors from a tent instead of a camper. As for gear, i know i need to keep his pack light but what kind of pack would you recommend? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My boy loves Dinosaur Valley near Glen Rose.

There are some primitive sites on their map. I have only made day trips there.

Ive been thinking about dinosaur valley. I think he would have a blast there.  It seems to be about the only place that offers some primitive camping that you must hike to. and pretty close to home too.  I just want to be cautious so i dont burn him out on his first trip.

Since you said you had never been camping or hiking, maybe a car camping trip and do some short day hikes?

We have done Cedar Hill State Park on Joe Pool for some car camping and fishing.

We've done some short day hikes at the fort worth nature center but they dont allow overnights.  Ive done plenty of camping in my time but never hiked in to a location and camped.  I want to experience this with him. i guess kind of like a first for both if that makes sense. i actually thought of renting a spot at dinosaur valley to set up a camper for the family and use that as a basecamp then my son and i hike to another spot for an overnight. If anything goes wrong we're not far from the real camp.
